About Brigitta

Brigitta started yoga in her early twenties. She was fortunate to find the most inspiring Iyengar teachers, with whom she did her apprenticeship. Those were years of intense guided practice before she started to teach.

She met Mr Iyengar in person when she had just started practising yoga and he became a central part of her yoga life. She did intensive courses in Pune, India with Guruji in the late 1970s and the 1980s, and many more since.

Brigitta moved from her home country Holland to Switzerland for six years and then settled in South Africa, where she lived for 30 years, practising, studying and teaching. Her classes grew from beginners to advanced to training teachers.

She was very involved with the Iyengar Yoga Institute, both as a committee member and as chair, in addition to being a teacher trainer and assessor. Brigitta's “home” has been Iyengar yoga all these years. Mr Iyengar’s insights and creativity continue to inspire her. She feels called, and at the same time privileged, to share this wonderful discipline, which brings so many gifts to each person who is willing to engage with yoga. As a teacher, Brigitta is insightful and rigorous, but also sensitive. She brings kindness and care to all students, with a sense of humour and lightness. Her attitude to teaching can be described well by this quote from William Butler Yeats: "Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire".

Yoga means to yoke. It means both the process of uniting as well as union.

Iyengar Yoga Oslo strives to be a community of practitioners who come together to share this path.

Yoga is for everyone and everyone should benefit from the practice. In this way, the traditional idea of yoga as a personal and individual practice can be expanded to include more social aspects and connections with others.

B.K.S. Iyengar

Profound, intelligent, and transformative, Iyengar Yoga is for every age, body type, and fitness level. Iyengar Yoga provides practical tools to create and maintain bodily health and vitality, mental clarity, emotional serenity, and spiritual well-being.

Developed by B.K.S. Iyengar during his more than 75 years of teaching, Iyengar Yoga is grounded in the ancient Indian tradition and philosophy of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras. Iyengar Yoga offers a safe, systematic and intelligent progression of study to develop each student’s skills and abilities, within each class and from class to class.

Iyengar Yoga is a highly-developed teaching methodology that includes demonstrations of the postures, precise use of language and specific instructions to develop students’ understanding and intelligent action in practice. Sequencing of the postures helps students develop strength and flexibility, stamina and concentration, and correct body alignment. Individual correction and adjustment of students take place, when necessary. The use of props such as blankets, blocks, belts and chairs are used to deepen learning and adjust postures to individual needs.

“One’s spiritual realisation lies in none other than how one walks among and interacts with one’s fellow beings”. - B.K.S. Iyengar
